7 Steps To Define Your Target Customer

Do you know your target customer of your business? If not, know that you are certainly not the only one. It's one of the biggest challenges faced by companies of all sizes, whether it's starting up a business, launching a new product, or setting up on a new market. 

Every business needs customers to survive, but not every customer will do. That's why it's important to target a specific customer base in your marketing efforts.  

But where do you look to get the right kind of clientele?

Here in this article, seven steps that will allow you to get there! 

1. Define your product or service

Who is most likely to be interested in the product or service you are selling? 

To identify your target customers, you must clearly define the product you are offering. Ask yourself questions such as: 

  • What are the features and benefits of your product or service?  
  • How much does it cost ? 
  • How does it meet the needs of your target market?  
  • Who is most likely to be interested in its features? 
  • What differentiates it from the competing products or services? 

This way you can be sure that you are marketing effectively to the right people.

2. Consider your current customer base

Before you can target new customers, you must first understand your current customer base .  

  • Who are the people who are already buying from you?  
  • Why do they choose you over others?  
  • How often do they buy? The number of times the customer frequents/purchases the product, service 
  • Where do they buy? On site, online… 

When you take the time to understand your current customer base, you empower yourself to successfully target new customers.

3 . Research the market where your target customer is located

Where does he live ? What does he spend his time doing? What motivates him? 

To find your target customers, you will need to research the market where they are. This will help you understand what their needs and wants are, and how you can reach them with your product or service.  

Start by identifying the demographics of your target market, such as age, gender, income level, etc. Next, examine the competition in the area to see what other companies are offering.

Finally, consider conducting surveys or focus groups with potential customers to find out how they feel about your offering. The more information you have about what customers want, the more likely they are to buy from you over another when it comes time to make their purchasing decision.

For example, if you're selling a new type of sunscreen, your target customer is likely someone who spends a lot of time outdoors. Places like beaches, parks, and hiking trails would be good places to reach these people with marketing campaigns.

4 . Identify buyer personas

Once you have a better understanding of your target audience, create one or more personas that represent your ideal customer.  

Buyer personas are fictional characters based on real data such as market research and customer surveys . They help you better understand your target audience.  

Give each persona a name, story, personality, goals…be sure to include as much detail as possible. 

  • What are the demographic characteristics of this person?  
  • What are their needs or wants that your product or service can meet? 

The answers to these questions will allow you to more effectively reach your target customers and grow your business.

5 . Create marketing campaigns aimed at your target customer

Now that you know who you are targeting, you can create marketing campaigns specifically designed to reach them where they are and persuade them to buy from you! 

There are a number of marketing channels you can use, so it's important to select the right ones for your business . Any marketing campaign should be designed with the target customer in mind. To reach her, you will need to tailor your marketing message to her specific needs and desires. Use language that resonates with him and make sure your message is clear and concise. 

If your target customer is mostly active on social media, for example, you'll want to create content that can be easily shared and engaged with customers on those platforms. If your target customer is more likely to respond to personal interaction, direct marketing strategies like face-to-face selling or telemarketing may be more effective or you can also choose Omni channel marketing

Look for them on social media, at industry events, or even in the grocery store queue. Once you find them, give them a reason to buy from you by offering them great products or services at a reasonable price. Keep them coming back by giving them the best possible customer service.

6 . Track and measure results

Keep an eye on your marketing efforts to see if they are working well. Are you reaching your target audience? Does he engage in your campaigns? Are conversion rates increasing ? Adapt your tactics as necessary to achieve the desired results.

7 . Never stop testing and refining

The world is constantly changing, so make sure your target customer definition changes with it. It is therefore important to periodically review your definition and ensure that it still accurately represents what you offer. 

Regularly test and refine your marketing campaigns to ensure they are still effective in reaching and converting your target customers.
