Angelina Jolie's under-a-glass Tomb Raider like-but-nothing-as-bad-as-The-Nanny-created for the opening of the biopic Lara Croft: Tomb Raider when she was just 19. (Right as Jolie came off of The Umbrella Academy and attempted to rest for a bit.) When the film came out in 2001, Jolie was 19 and looking like a young Julia Roberts, but a number of prescient and discouraging things about the movie were already bubbling to the surface.
Writing for GQ, K. Austin Collins chronicled the early days of the film, after the release of the first trailer, that Jolie had never seen the film she was being told she was cast in. "When I saw the trailer, I was excited," she said. "I imagined being in a great action movie with a challenging role. I never imagined being in a horror movie."
Collins explains:
With about eight minutes left, Jolie's character, Lara, a young London backpacker with blond hair and a flinty, no-nonsense manner, metamorphoses from sharp-witted, whip-smart to wearing a bib in the middle of a speech to the camera in a skintight catsuit, sweat glistening on her face. A mouse is put in her arms, and as she tries to stuff it in her bra, Lara starts convulsing and screaming, an evil spasm that looks like the biggest seizure the child star had ever had. A burst of blood bursts out of Lara's mouth, and within seconds, it's dark, the soundtrack of Silence of the Lambs echoing in the earpiece.
Jolie, who was in London shooting Maleficent, was spooked by the disturbing imagery, and even more so by the idea that she might have to kill a kid. "Suddenly, I wasn't Lara Croft," she said. "This was someone else."
