Whether you’re in the market, looking for a job, or currently employed, know that age should never be a deciding factor in your qualification to work. Companies must provide equal job opportunities for everyone, despite an applicant’s gender, race, religious background, or age.

What is Age Discrimination and What Can You Do about It?

Age discrimination at work refers to the unfair treatment of an employee for the sole reason of their age. An example would be a company terminating a 50-year-old employee and forcing them into retirement, despite knowing that the retirement age in the U.S.is between 65 and 67.

This type of discrimination can happen pre-employment and during employment. A human resource manager ignoring job applications from candidates outside of their age requirement and an employee being turned down for a promotion, but the spot going to a younger and less qualified worker, are examples of this.

To help you better understand how prevalent this type of prejudice at work is, take a look at the visual guide below. If you’re questioning whether you or someone you know may be a victim of age discrimination, this infographic will help you identify and address age discrimination in the workplace.
