With Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), there’s so much going on. Every week it seems like Google or Facebook is releasing a new kind of AI to make things faster or improve our experience.

Google is executing on its clear lead in AI across every surface it develops for.

For 466 million deaf and hard of hearing people around the world, captions are more than a convenience — they make content more accessible — Google Pixel 4

And don’t get me started on the number of self-driving car companies like Tesla. This is a good thing though. I’m not a fan of driving and roads are dangerous with the number of motor vehicle accidents in highways.

Even with all this happening, there’s still yet to be an agreed definition of what exactly artificial intelligence is.

Some would argue deep learning can be considered AI, others will say it’s not AI unless it passes the Turing Test.

As it speaks as a means of measuring whether a computer was capable of demonstrating intelligent behavior equivalent to or indistinguishable from that of a human.

This lack of definition stunted the progress in the beginning. It was hard to learn something which had so many different definitions.

Even with a lack of meaning. we start to hear more and more about machine learning and Artificial Intelligence.

Evolution of Human Intelligence

Soon, artificial intelligence will commonly become intangible, indistinguishable, and incomprehensible for humans.

As AI doesn’t necessarily need a tangible embodiment, it can manifest itself through different mediators, such as a graphical user interface or a voice interface.

As, we already trust Spotify recommendations without a second glance or talk to Siri and Alexa like they have summoned spirits, bits of intelligence without a tangible form.

Secondly, AI becomes invisible by passing the Turing test, or its more relevant variants. An intelligent system that manages to simulate human-level communication, and cognitive as well as emotional abilities, can become indistinguishable from humans and, thus, the “artificiality” of its intelligence becomes imperceptible for us.

Thirdly, and most importantly, AI escapes the human gaze when the details of its effects and technological dynamics go beyond human perception and understanding.

We can be aware of the existence, presence, and effects of intelligent systems, but we no longer fully comprehend what these systems do, how they achieve their goals or what are their definite effects.

Artificial Intelligence technological improvement

As, companies like Google have been investing in artificial intelligence for years at this point, and that lead is beginning to pay off by end of 2019 as Android 10, at its core, represents the merging of software with these smarter tools by taking things to the next level by making the Machine Learning run on devices such as personal phone or smartwatch, using it to help the end-user proactively, rather than simply applying the same set of rules to everyone.

A great example of utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence: adaptive battery. Google now processes signals from across your daily usage, including the types of load you put on it during the day (for workouts, for example) and adjusts the phone’s performance accordingly to squeeze out as much as possible.

Apple similarly has built similar features for optimizing battery, but where you start seeing the rift is how this is implemented. Google uses signals from throughout the day, over time and the different types of usage you use then creates a long-term understanding of your usage patterns.

Every day, technology helps people spellcheck sentences, categorize emails, and predict traffic. However, it has been taken beyond ordinary limits by a company like Beyond Limits as it produces AI software solutions with something new: cognitive intelligence. These advanced systems mimic the functions of the human brain to think like you and me.

As this form of AI fosters situational awareness, hypotheses generation, and human-like reasoning to make informed decisions.

Unlike some AI companies that focus on playing games or serving ads, Beyond Limits blends deep learning and machine learning techniques with symbolic AI that can emulate human intuition.

It helps to create automated solutions that can truly think like humans and magnify human capabilities to help companies stay competitive or transform their business for the future.

So if a major container port needs AI to plan and schedule all the traffic in and out of the harbor, or manage their fleet of robotic cranes, Beyond Limits can apply the same scheduling technology that powered autonomous Rover operations on Mars as company’s close ties to Caltech and JPL.

Our AI can work with unknown or missing data and figure out hypothetical scenarios and fill in the missing pieces… Exploring space is about being able to handle the unknown. Real-world, industrial-grade AI needs to do the same to handle business issues at scale, across different industries — AJ Abdallat, Beyond Limits CEO

AI can dramatically change businesses for the better. Its impact is becoming evident as it helps transform niche market segments and global industries alike — including energy production, logistics, and finance.

Large enterprises aren’t the only ones that benefit from AI. Complex AI systems aren’t simple products like packaged software applications.

Most solutions are custom-engineered to solve particular problems, mainly for large enterprises. As a result, AI may not be purchased directly by small or medium business owners, and maybe invisible to most people.

For example, AI helps me and many other filter spam, automated messages.

More advanced AI might help companies and startups make complex decisions about spending, strategy, and hiring. It’s easy to overlook these minor tasks, but behind the scenes, they are producing results that help people and companies in many ways.

With technological advancement, AI will soon go beyond Clarke’s third law, stating that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” as we don’t anymore have any chance to figure out the trick — or even realize that any trick occurred in the first place.

As with current pace of AI development, even seasoned experts have a hard time keeping up — Pedro Domingos

Hence, sophisticated AI technologies will provide legitimate and correct insights based on a chain of complex interactions that can’t be followed by any human being, even an expert.

If so, can we anymore reach definite scientific conclusions or make well-informed decisions without the assistance of artificial intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence evolved outside human control?

As with any significant technological innovation and its mainstream adaptions, artificial intelligence is evolving from an obscure curiosity to a powerful utility.

Consequently, the most valuable asset of tomorrow’s world might be an intelligent system that no human can fully understand or control.

Simultaneously, AI is turning into an unprecedented cultural and technological phenomenon, affecting the way we assess and define “intelligence” itself.

Regarding this, human intelligence might not be the most relevant measure for intelligence itself. The “artificial” in artificial intelligence starts to lose its true meaning of being man-made.

Today, human intelligence is shaping artificial intelligence, and, increasingly, artificial intelligence is starting to shape human intelligence.

When the impact of AI systems increases, more people need to be able to understand their workings and effects. To achieve this, we need to be able to augment human intelligence to the extent it allows us to interact with various specimens of intelligent systems in very sustainable terms.

This very objective could be sustainable via enhancing the capabilities of today’s researchers, designers, and engineers to keep up with the AI technologies they’re building. By which, people needed to be empowered to interact with AI technologies on their terms.

New learning games are presently enabling children to learn coding and robotics, familiarizing them with intelligent systems and their possibilities.

In doing so it could make “the ghost in the machine” more tangible, distinguishable, and comprehensible by illustrating the effects of intelligent systems in our daily lives and enabling people to decide their level of interaction.

In an overall sense, AI technologies could evolve into a platform, an infrastructure similar to the Internet, that would allow people themselves to decide the way they utilize AI or contribute to its design and development.

As it would significantly change the way we could understand AI or interact with intelligent systems in general.

Human and machine intelligence would be intertwined in unseen ways and revolutionize the original meaning of artificial intelligence.
