If you look up to someone and wonder how they can write so well, you are not alone. Exceptional writers are those who have spent countless hours honing their skills, bleeding on the keyboard, and learnt from their mistakes, over and again. And are nowhere close to stopping. That’s what it takes to become an exceptional writer – consistency and the will to learn. But don’t let me spill the beans to you already.

Everybody starts at someplace. It is a journey and not a destination when we are looking to become better. Through consistent efforts and time, one can always amp up their writing, or for that matter, any skills. And take it up to any level they wish to.

Although there are endless numbers of skills one can possess, I am going to list out the top 3 in this piece that will make you a better writer.

As Richard Bach says:

“A professional writer is an amateur who didn’t quit.”

1. Adaptability

The ability to adapt to a brand’s tone of voice is vital for any writer. I agree, you have a voice that makes your writing unique and you won’t like switching that. However, the reality is – every brand is unique, followed by their unique tone and voice. As a writer, we have to bear in mind that our writing matches the tone of the brand we are writing for. Words are magical and have the power to make people feel something. Every brand wants to make its audience feel something to get their message across.

As a writer, you have to put yourself in the shoes of the target audience and understand how your message sounds. This is something one would not know on day 1, for sure. With consistent practice, you will be able to identify different voices.

“A word after a word after a word is power.”
Margaret Atwood.

2. A Hint of SEO

You would think a writer’s work is limited to juggling with words, and fit them into the screen in a creative manner that entices their readers. And that’s right. However, your beautiful piece of content needs to be discoverable as well.

Any piece of content on the web is published after a well-thought intention, right? It could be to educate readers, spread awareness, or increase the bottom line of your business. In the end, you want your audience to read that.

How do you make that happen? With the help of Search Engines.

Once you learn to optimise your content for the search engines, you will realise it is not as dreadful as it looks. Infact, businesses claim to drive the most amount of traffic from search engines alone. They use content to fuel the search engines which drives traffic to their website.

Learning how to look for the right keywords, how to add them to your article, and how to optimise your blog’s headline are small things that require sharp attention and will certainly make you a better content writer.

3. Communication

Lastly, the essence of being a writer is communicating to the audience, the message of the brand, in the best possible manner.

“The role of a writer is not to say what we all can say, but what we are unable to say.”
Anais Nin.

That quote is just perfect! Not only does communication enhance your copywriting skills, but it also enhances your daily conversations, making your life easier.

With that being said, do not forget to always keep upskilling. There is no end in sight when you consider the skills one can adapt to. Upskilling not only expands your horizons but also makes you a better professional.
