A tectonic shift towards fuel flexibility and low cost for emission control has stimulated growth of circulating fluidized bed boiler market value. While pulverized coal combustion (PCC) remains one of the most sought-after technology in the power generation, the circulating fluidized bed combustion (CBFC) technology has become one of the real competitors to PCC systems.

CFB boiler has gained impetus in the past several years in the wake of its exceptional fuel flexibility. Advanced CFB boilers are offering a viable combustion technology for solid petrochemical residues, including asphaltene, pet coke, recovered fuels and biomasses.

CFB technologies will continue to play an invaluable role in the use of low-grade coal, with its effective NOx formation control and high-sulfur capture efficiency soaring in popularity in recent years. According to a forecast, circulating fluidized bed boilers market size will witness a considerable gain by 2025, reaching an annual value of $50 billion.

As the demand for power has soared globally, investments in circulating fluidized bed boiler industry will continue to surge by leaps and bounds. According to the IEA report, electricity demand will rebound in 2021 and expand by around 3%. While electrification will continue in buildings, electricity will displace natural gas in households in the next decade or so.

Biomass is likely to be one of the most demanding fuels, with wood-based biomass gaining substantial traction in the past several years. The biomass which will be sought-after in boiler will be residues that are not used anywhere else.

Prominent companies are leading from the front when it comes to biomass firing. For instance, Nippon Steel Engineering and Toyo Engineering Corporation—a Joint Venture—gave an order to ANDRITZ to provide a circulating fluidized bed boiler which has a flue gas cleaning system.

These companies will apparently use the boiler in the novel biomass power plant to be constructed in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. Increased penetration of CFB boilers is majorly attributed to high efficiency, low emissions, prevalence and fuel flexibility. The company asserts that the biomass power plant fired with palm kernel shells and wood pellets would generate around 75 MWeI of power.

Supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers are likely to set the trend and will potentially be the future of CFB combustion technology in light of their high efficiency of coal energy and low cost emission control. With the demand to augment the steam parameters of CFB boilers to supercritical parameters rising, stakeholders are likely to further their investments in the global circulating fluidized bed boiler industry.

Sumitomo SHI FW won a contract for CFB boiler in Taiwan in July 2019, commercial operation was scheduled for July 2021. The company will boost the 19 MWe CFB steam generator and auxiliary equipment and offer technical advisory services for commissioning and erection. In October 2020, the company was awarded a contract to modernize a current CFB boiler, that will apparently lead to a 30% decline in CO2 emission in Austria.

North America is likely to come up as a happy hunting ground on the heels of urgency to reduce emissions. Since SOx and particulate emissions can be cut by over 90% and carbon dioxide emissions can be reduced by 25%, leading companies in the region are using CDB boilers to further reduce emissions by 5-10%.

Stakeholders are also touted to invest in APAC circulating fluidized bed boiler market in the wake of the penetration of supercritical CFB boilers in Japan, India and China. Not to mention, a supercritical CFB technology can enhance overall plant efficiency by 5-10% vis-à-vis conventional natural circulation steam technology.

With reliability, low emissions and long life, CFB boiler technologies are likely to be sought-after for a slew of industrial fuels and energy needs in oil & gas, utility and petrochemical sectors.
