Competition or displacement: AI will make human superbeings

When an average human hears you speak of Artificial Intelligence (AI), what comes to his/her mind is a weapon that could displace the entire human race forever. They show concerns for their career, their loved ones and way of life (culture).
It is true that AI will transform local, global, individual and corporate cultures, but in better ways. These are not fears, but concerns. It is safe for us if they don’t consume our thoughts in ways that hinder us from exploring new opportunities, as our lives aren’t defined by machines, but their creators (machines are just as honest as their creators).
Our lives aren’t defined by machines, but their creators (machines are just as honest as their creators).
Artificial Intelligence exists at various stages. In order of capabilities, ArtificialSuperintelligence (ASI) are machine higher than human intelligence, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) are capable of carrying out diverse intelligence and Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) are built for a specific purpose.
While it is expected to fear that ASI could displace human, our development of machines is still at the stage of ANI. Although, with organisations like Microsoft investing heavily in AGI (set to succeed in 2040), IBM investment in quantum computing (with AI) and Nuralink goal to merge human with AI, we must all anticipate the unexpected.
At our recent Wikimedia foundation meetup at the University of Ilorin, while we were editing and creating new wiki-pages I began to imagine a scenario where AI will substitute the activities of wiki-editors. I imagined how having bots crawl content to Wikipedia, create pages and add adequate preferences will displace editors. This is a great challenge.
What this means for wiki-editors is that they now have the challenge of finding new ways to sustain their relevance on the platform. It will be a game-changer. Wiki-editors will need creativity like the AlphaGo world champions (Machine Vs human scenario). This will spark a healthy competition that breeds innovation to serve humanity in better ways.
What this means for Wikimedia foundation; AI will reduce the creation of inadequate pages, boost objectivity and accuracy, reduce paid editing, misunderstanding among editors and will allow them to focus more on other innovative ways to develop the world’s largest knowledge base with the help of Artificial Assisted Intelligence (AAI).
Isn’t that impressive? Picturing AI as Assisted Intelligence (ASI) and not Substituted Intelligence (SI) is a better way to understanding the activities of AI. This can be done by studying and simplifying the concept of AI for the understanding of every human. This should be the responsibility of every stakeholder at all levels of human endeavours especially in developing countries (at government level, institutions, individual etc).
Experts should map out ways to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into all human endeavour, in ways that support the SDGs if all nations must benefit from these innovations. AI should be SDGs centric.
AI should be SDGs centric.
Finding ways to achieve the SDGs with AI will fast track the achievement of these goals and aid the development of third world nations who are crisis-ridden.
For instance, the effectiveness of AI in health, oil and gas, recruiting, print and broadcast journalism, advertising, public relations, programming, logistics, sign-languages, organisation management etc. have yielded immense benefits in risk reduction, wellbeing and waste of resources.
This should not change our perception of these organisms (AI) as a nuke capable of good and evil. Adequate precaution, standardisation, government regulation and rationalisation are needed to monitor their rapid growth.
A critical analysis of the role played by Aida in the series “Agents of Shield” is scarier. While AI doesn’t have superpowers (yet), we all should be wary of reproducible AI (the alien invasion we all fear might just be the one we create ourselves).
While AI don’t have superpowers (yet), we all should be weary of reproducible AI.
For human, lack of trust in one’s creativity, judgement and thoughts are some of the reasons for a possible displacement. For instance, the sum of 2 and 2 is four, but some among us will not trust their self-judgement until they get an answer from a calculator. This is also the case with storing numbers, duties, accepting responsibilities and having a to-do list.
Technology intrusion will further deteriorate human abilities if we do not challenge ourselves. For instance, notifications pop-ups have further reduced employees productivity at work. To stay relevant AI, we need to be twice smart.
To stay relevant, we need to be twice smart.
Although AI is based built based on existing knowledge, they will set the foundation for our worth, abilities and lifestyle, in ways that spark another evolution where everyone does not have equal capacity to adapt. Hence we all won’t become superbeings. Only the most responsive and fittest will be.
Those who challenge themselves beyond the limit with their creative thinking, wild imagination and critical thinking will survive the tide. Nevertheless, human has always embraced change, but this change (AI) will embrace many of us out of been superbeings into permanent displacement.
