Players need certain controller configurations in order to play the game. In addition to standard single-player style games, the game has short practice modes in which players can practice each song's lead or bass guitar track, as well as rock out with their song's rhythm guitar track. Both the guitar and the bass guitar tracks are controlled by a single Guitar Hero controller, though they are different versions of the standard controller. The delta guitar features a plastic guitar neck on the back of the controller, which allows the player to have a better view of where they are shouldering the guitar.
The release of Guitar Hero II for the Xbox Live Marketplace added three new tracks to the catalog, to be available on the Xbox 360 only: The Beatles's "Taxman" featuring Bryan Abrams, "Crazy Train" featuring Gwar`s Michael Bishop, and "Walking on Sunshine" featuring Kool & the Gang's Kool Kaye. On April 1, 2014, the lineup of tracks available for download on the Xbox Live Marketplace was reduced to only those two tracks and "Ain`t No Sunshine" by Bill Withers. Both the Beatles's "Taxman" and "Walking on Sunshine" were only available through the Xbox Live Arcade Marketplace, and were later released as DLC on Apple iTunes.[5][7]
The PlayStation 2 version of the game allows for the use of downloadable content available through PlayStation Store. These are typically released as packs of three, or as single song.[11] Packs are grouped in series, with the PlayStation 2 version of the album being available through the main PlayStation Store, while Xbox 360, PC and Wii U versions on the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and Wii U's Virtual Console, respectively, can only purchase the individual track. All Xbox 360, Wii U and PC songs (except "Ain`t No Sunshine" by Bill Withers) cost $3.99.[7][10]
