Eminem has long had an interest in the nuances of race relations and the sorts of things that motivate racism, and his upcoming ninth studio album, Recovery, holds up this interest as a mirror. Marshall does not apologize for the damage he and his music have done to minority groups and the type of man, white or black, who refuses to evolve into a better man because of the privilege he or she wields, but rather insists that he isnt worthy of such labels in the first place. Its not a petty point to make, or his total redemption implied by the album title, for it hearkens back to the impetuous new-found efforts of his early career, and shows that a man of passion and temper can become more empathetic, but all this presumed by the album named after a set of tools employed for mans curing self-image. You should listen to this track, which again sounds like it has suffered from a long gestation, and you can tell how much it has benefited from time in the studio, even if a few bars feel like filler. In the very least, if youre searching for another best-of collection of Eminem material, this is a good place to start, as its got plenty of hits like,Im Back, Battle Axe, Stan, Proof, and alot of tunes I missed and that you probably didnt, but I like, so thats good. L.M.
If youre searching for a preview of Eminem at his most timid, you might look no further than one of his earliest and most effervescent tracks, a lulling piano ballad about friendship, modern communication, and the golden thorns we bear. In it, the legendary pop producer Jimmy Jam spends the better part of five minutes just synthesizing a loop and humming a line, as Slim Shady pleads for the support of his friend, and himself as well. If youve ever wondered what kind of producer Eminem would have been in an era when the inner-city rapping act seemed like the last thing they were looking for, this is exactly the sound he would have made if he had embraced the sound of the early 90s, before he went with his more guttural and mature sound of classic Shady.
