The GPON market size is estimated to surpass USD 30 billion by 2028, as per an analysis by GMI Inc. The Internet has become highly ubiquitous as on today. With increasing modern and digitally driven lifestyles, basic broadband infrastructure has emerged as the prime requirement to achieve socio-economic development, amplify employment, and enhance civic engagement.

According to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), in 2020, broadband penetration worldwide soared considerably, with India at 55% and China at a massive 95% share. European nations on the other hand showcased broadband penetration somewhere between 95–115%.

In view of such a scenario, developing economies within low- and middle-income brackets are increasingly shifting towards novel technological solutions like Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON).

Deemed to be the future of cabling technology, GPON largely depends on fibre-optic broadband connection to generate a point connecting multipoint network, offering individual users all fibre access to any ethernet-bound endpoint.

The technology can transmit data over a relatively greater range of 10–20 kilometres, unlike conventional copper cables which only cover 100 meters. Moreover, GPON provides high-performance bandwidth, is environmentally friendly and a sophisticated technology.

Fibre investments such as in last mile to connectivity continue to accelerate, driving new development in next-generation GPON such as XG-PON and XGS-PON.

Europe ramps up deployment of XGS-PON

Various broadband companies and technology developers in Europe are looking to address the burgeoning demand for full-proof continuous internet using advanced GPON systems. Highlighting recent developments:

Ø In 2021, mobile digital communication company Proximus & Nokia deployed first ever 25G passive optical network (PON) in Belgium, offering ground-breaking speed beyond 20 Gbps.

Ø KPN, a Netherlands-based IT and telecom provider, added XGS-PON technology on its fibre network in 2021, with plans to make XGS-PON a key determinant for existing GPON networks and new fibre networks built in future.

Deployment of XGS-PON has also accelerated across several countries in Europe. For instance, Spanish mobile network operator, Orange España announced the commercial deployment of 10 Gbps fibre broadband service across five Spanish cities including Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Seville, and Zaragoza.

The new XGS-PON technology-based service has been deployed for residential users and businesses across the five cities of Spain and is expected to penetrate each city of Spain in near future.

Apart from this, companies in Europe that specialize in GPON technology are forming alliance with other related firms to expand their regional footprint. In 2022, Deutsche Giga Access GmbH (DGA) selected Adtran SDX Series by Adtran, a leading provider of next-gen open networking fibre broadband services, to deploy the XGS-PON technology-driven FTTH (Fibre-to-the-Home) network in Niedersachsen, Germany. Initiatives such as these will open new business avenues for GPON network providers and help unlock Europe’s economy growth potential.

Advent of 5G infrastructure and network, increasing dependence on internet for day-to-day activities, larger influence of telecommunication services in driving economic growth, and the need for novel products are some other key drivers anticipated to power the trajectory of GPON market over the coming years.
