Effect Of Social Media

In today's hassle-filled, clumsy, and technologically advanced world we come across a bold word called ‘Social Media. We also could not believe how this phenomenon shapes our identity.

“Identity”, yes our identity becomes a mold and could be molded to any specific character. This behavior can also be called mimicking others without having full consciousness about doing that.

We generally have become two-faced person. one face for real life and another one for the virtual.

There is a popular saying "One cannot sail in two boats at the same time"

This is why our human values suffer a lot and which results in two-faced attitudinal behaviors. we generally have a sophisticated image to portray on the internet but our reality speaks differently. Social Media is making us anti-Social

But we cannot deny the fact that social media also has positive aspects besides plenty of negative aspects.

positive impacts of social media

  • The most important aspect is 'Digital Marketing' whose market is booming due to social media. Digital Marketing whose market is growing at the rate of 25-30% in India annually. Social commerce 2022 trends
  • Social Media helps us explore ourselves and do experimentation with us.
  • Social media help a mass form of students to learn essential job skills which would be helpful for them in the future.

But unfortunately, the negative aspects of Social Media is more than the positive one.

The dark side of social media that impacts our life

  • HOW SOCIAL MEDIA CONTROLS OUR BRAIN: Our brain releases a chemical called 'Dopamine' which gives us a sensation of happiness when we do something exciting. but the problem is when our brain releases this chemical we even crave for more of that since it gives us happiness and we continue to do in repetitions even if we know that this activity is not good for us which later turns into a long-term Habit then it becomes nearly impossible to get out of the Trap. What Social Media does to our Brains

  • SKINNER BOX EXPERIMENT: This experiment was designed by the process called ‘Operant Conditioning’ which refers to the instrumental conditioning, its learning method that occurs through rewards and punishments of behavior. It makes us do the behavior repetitive which gives us immense pleasure. Skinner(1948) studied this by 'Skinner Box Experiment'. Skinner's Box Experiment-Practical Psychology

  • NEED FOR SOCIAL VALIDATION, SELF DOUBT, AND LOW ESTEEM: In this world, we always become happy when someone gives us a compliment, but every time no one has time to give us a compliment without any reason but if we post our best picture and videos on Instagram, Facebook, etc. We can see people liking our post and commenting on that and we crave this temporary happiness.
  1. We start comparing ourselves to others.
  2. We try to become what we are not, i.e. mimicking someone else
  3. Start losing confidence
  4. Start self-doubting and become a low-esteemed person
  5. Become introverted, stop socializing with our family
  6. Feel cornered, Feel depressed, Become arrogant affecting our mental health.
  7. Suicidal thoughts start popping into our minds.

We think that they have such a great life which is unrealistic to us but we don't realize that people don't showcase their real-life on the reel world of social media. We get confused and start to feel cornered or become unhappy seeing their glamorous world. But we forget they are also real people that they also have real-life like us. We can easily differentiate their real-life from reel life by social media influencers' vlogging channels.
