Being referred to as Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is something which is surprisingly refreshing. Unlike on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2 and Windows iterations, this version of the game has been fully dedicated to taking advantage of the PSP's graphical power. It's not a simple port, but Rockstar has done a fantastic job of placing a frame-rate cap at 60 fps and making use of the system's hardware.
If San Andreas has a single problem it's clear-cut, it's that some pieces of the script are simply rubbish. Luckily, the story carries excellent momentum throughout and that's because of its characters. Players can be introduced to a seemingly huge cast of characters almost immediately, with each having both notable traits and eccentricities.
Aside from the expected main plot, there's also the small stuff. This includes various franchises in San Andreas, such as Motorbikes, Internet, Movies, and Restaurants. It's these aspects which give San Andreas such a unique personality and set it apart from previous game in the series. The music in San Andreas is an acquired taste, but that's mostly come about by the sampling filters and track selection on the audio options (or lack thereof) of the game's soundtracks. It doesn't sound like Grand Theft Auto this time around, but less of a re-invention of the franchise and more of an entirely new experience.
Like most game-controllers with an analogue stick in their right corner, I found this one extremely productive due to its configuration, it works fairly well as a third analog stick, when the camera is looking to a side or behind the player, it's a must to have it on the D-Pad. I've managed to find the configuration somewhat annoying at times, which is moreso when you're having a tough situation, such as some falling off the edge of a balcony to your death or inside a vent and need to use the directional buttons to magically reappear.
Accomplishments can be earned during play, ranging from simple or detailed tasks like multiplayer firework shows to more complex plots like using character corruption on a minor. Accomplishments can be viewed in the Appearance menu as well as displayed as a trophy and percentage in the main menu, as well as in-game after completion of each mission. Completed and unachieved tasks are indicated by a star symbol. Achievements can be earned in dry dock, which requires San Andreas Bonus Game. Since the game's technical problems hold up a good 45 or so minutes of the single-player experience, dry dock is an absolute Must Have - especially for completionists. a0fb89163a
