Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection or ICSI is a technology to treat male infertility. In this treatment, sperm is directly injected into the egg for fertilization. This treatment is typically employed when a male partner is facing issues with the quantity, quality, and mobility of sperm. Men that have undergone a vasectomy or have some genetic issues that affect sperm mobility can go with this treatment.

ICSI has helped several couples to conceive. However, it is a complex process and requires excellent expertise. Also, there is some risk involved in this procedure which includes birth defects or multiple pregnancies.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection procedure

The complete ICSI fertility treatment procedure involves 7 steps, let’s take a look at each of them:

Ovarian Stimulation: In this medications are given to the patient to stimulate ovaries for egg production. Such stimulation will enhance the chances of getting quality eggs for fertilization.

Egg Retrieval: Once the egg reaches maturity level, it will be retrieved from the woman’s ovaries through a needle. The extracted eggs are then kept in a culture medium in a laboratory.

Sperm Collection: On the same day of egg retrieval, a semen sample will be taken from the man. The sperm is then washed and the healthiest one will be chosen for injection.

Sperm Injection: Through a fine needle, sperm will be injected into the matured egg. The entire process is done under a microscope with extreme accuracy and precision.

Fertilization: After sperm injection, the fertilization process is checked. In case of success, the eggs are kept for several days in the laboratory to let them develop.

Embryo Transfer: After a few days, the healthiest embryo is kept in the woman’s uterus. This transfer takes place through a catheter inserted via the cervix.

Pregnancy Test: After a few weeks of embryo transfer, the pregnancy test will be done to check the success of the procedure.

Ideally, ICSI is a complex process, which requires a high level of expertise. Usually, it is a safe process, but you must know about the potential risk and complications involved in this procedure before opting for it.

The cost involved in ICSI

ICSI fertility treatment cost depends on various factors which include the clinic location, the qualification of your healthcare provider, and the additional services they will provide during the treatment.

On average, the treatment cost may vary from 1.5 lakhs to 2.5 lakhs. This cost will include the medications charges, egg retrieval, sperm collection, ultrasound monitoring, the complete ICSI procedure, embryo transfer, lab test,, and consultation.

You must note that there are clinics that may offer some additional services which can impact the overall cost. Also, your insurance plan may cover part of infertility treatment, hence you must check with them about the coverage.

When to go with ICSI treatment?

This treatment usually works in male infertility and is recommended when previous attempts of IVF were unsuccessful. It is also suggested for patients with advanced maternal age, ovulation disorders, and endometriosis.

Before opting for ICSI, both partners should undergo a medical evaluation to know the underlying reason behind infertility. Through consultation your fertility specialist can let you know about the appropriate treatment based on the circumstances.

You must note that even while ICSI is an effective treatment for male infertility, it is not effective for all couples. Based on the infertility cause, you may go with other treatments like intrauterine insemination, ovulation induction, surrogacy,, or even adoption.

The possible risk involved in ICSI

ICSI is a safe procedure when performed by skilled professionals. However, like any other medical procedure, there is some risk involved in this treatment. Let’s discuss them in detail:

Multiple pregnancies: Women can give birth to more than one baby through ICSI treatment. This may put both the babies and the mother at risk.

Birth defects: Babies born with ICSI treatment may be at a slightly higher risk of birth defects. However overall the risk is relatively low.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS): In some cases, because of the medications taken to stimulate ovaries for multiple egg production may lead to OHSS. This can cause abdominal pain or bloating.

You must know the potential risk involved in the ICSI before going with this treatment. You must follow all the instructions of your health specialist, as with proper care and monitoring, you can minimize all such risks.

The success rate of ICSI

The success rate depends on factors like the age and health of the female partner, sperm quality, and the success rate of the fertility clinic you chose. Usually, the success rate is around 30-40% per cycle for women under 35 years. This rate will decrease with age and will become very less for women above 40 years.

The success rate also depends on underlying fertility issues, embryo quality, and the number of embryos transferred. You must contact the best fertility hospital to know more about it.

Bottom Line

Although ICSI contains some risks and ICSI treatment cost is more than an average fertilization process, it is best for couples struggling with fertility issues to go with it to get a healthy baby.
