when i first saw zellweger in cold war, she was fantastic, but i still got something from watching the movie. i was struck by her performance, which is one of the reasons i wasnt surprised when she won alfred and ida for chicago. zellweger has a way of making you feel for her character, even when it doesnt seem like shes actually that nice of a person. thats rare, and its the sort of unique performance that will most likely carry her to an oscar win this weekend. she also has a lot of competition, though. michael b. jordan and cynthia erivo are both excellent, but have both been overshadowed by zellweger.
lee and fournier, who have been nominated before for carol and spotlight, respectively, really impressed me in this film. they are both seasoned veterans who take their roles very seriously, and they both have terrific chemistry with their co-stars. the movie is a bit dark and depressing, but these two actors make the story more interesting and compelling. its hard to pick favorites among these four, but i think lee is the favorite for this category.
she has been nominated before for her roles in election and the favourite, but fincher completely outshines the competition in this film. he finds an incredible balance between the characters emotions and their physicality. this might be the first movie where fincher has actually adapted a book that wasnt made into a movie before. while he is known for his dark and gritty films, this movie has a lot of subtlety to it, which is actually very refreshing. 2516d825b2
