Learning French, Is It Like Riding A Bike?

Do I remember how it goes?

When I returned from France at the end of last year, I was very determined to try to continue immersing myself in the language to improve my poorly constructed sentences.

In April, life got a bit hard and what had already been a mammoth challenge of improving my French living in a native English-speaking monolingual country suddenly became too much.

Recently, after realising that some pre-purchased credits were about to expire, I decided to start back up with my teacher.

Besides the daily Duolingo exercises to keep my 700+ day streak going and the occasional video by some of my favourite you tubers, I have spoken absolutely no French for probably around six months.

It’s been hard getting back into conversing in another language. There is so much that I want to say, and no idea how to say it. The conversation is clunky, and my sentence structure is very simple. My speaking ability is nowhere near where it needs to be.

However

I am also reminded of how much I love French and speaking it. The rhythm and melodies of the sentences or phrases are so simple yet different to how English expresses itself. As a writer, I look for cool words or words with weird meanings, and it fascinates me to see similarities and also many differences.

I only have a couple more lessons left with my current teacher, and I don’t know if I can afford any more tutoring at the moment. Still, I look forward to the day when conversations in French aren’t clunky or incredibly disjointed. Until then, I will continue with Duolingo and imagine what life could look like if I ever got the chance to move back.
