Amazonite, also called Amazon Jade, is a semi-opaque, green to blue-green variety of microcline feldspar that is often streaked with white. Its colour was once thought to be caused by copper compounds; however more recent studies suggest that the blue-green colour is the result of small quantities of lead and water.
It is named after the Amazon River in Brazil, from which certain green stones were formerly obtained, but it is doubtful whether Amazonite occurs in the Amazon basin. In fact fine quality Amazonite has been mistaken for Jade. It is relatively soft at 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale.
Amazonite can look back through a long history as a powerful healing and prosperity talisman. From early Egyptian times it has been used in beading and worn as jewellery and well known in India, Egypt, Sudan and Mesopotamia as a holy stone and a popular amulet against a wide range of diseases. It has also been cut into tablets; part of the Egyptian Book of the Dead was engraved on Amazonite, and used as decorative material for building facades. An Amazonite scarab ring was found among Tutankhamen's treasures. Said to be the third stone in the breastplate of the Jewish High Priest.
Selling jewelry on amazon was also worn as jewellery in pre-Columbian South and Central America, and was used medicinally to heal wounds and illnesses of all kinds. It was rumoured to have adorned the shields of the formidable Amazonian tribe of female warriors said to have lived during the Bronze Age. The conquistadors prized it for adornment and its ability to be carved into religious objects.
