The gradual decolonization of the British Empire led to the formation of the Commonwealth of Nations, in which territories under its control sought independence in order to become self-governing and later gained sovereignty. The Empire's former dependents came together as equals. Members of the Commonwealth are not bound by any laws or constitution.
