General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution Friday condemning the Israeli settlement policies, taking a swipe at Israel’s international legitimacy for the first time.
The vote was 138-9 with 41 abstentions, in what critics called a historic moment. The measure was greeted with a standing ovation by members of the General Assembly, who had come to the chamber wearing badges saying “The floor is yours.”
Israel said the vote violated the U.N. Charter and was tantamount to “an anti-Israel conspiracy to deny Jewish history and existence.” The resolution, it said, “is a blow against Jewish settlement in the historic homeland of Israel and in its capital, Jerusalem.”
The measure condemned the settlements as “a flagrant violation” of international law and a threat to prospects for peace. It reaffirmed previous U.N. resolutions calling for an end to the settlements, including a resolution passed in the Security Council in February 2015 that demanded a halt in the expansion of Israeli settlement and the removal of Israeli settlements from Palestinian territory.
