i have been a fan of david montgomery since i first read his first book, "12 million black voices". i am a retired teacher and knew that i wanted to read this book because it made history interesting for me and my students. i read the book last summer and was disappointed that i had to wait a year to write this book review. i am glad i waited to write my review. it is a great book that is an excellent read. i have recommended this book to many of my friends that are interested in our history. it will not disappoint you. i do not think that many will like this book.
zinns people's history is written with an all-out passion to inspire the young. it is written to educate and uplift. he exhorts the reader to work to teach the students to see. they are essential to the united states' survival. this is why his writing will stay with us forever. to see and bring to life the stories of people and the struggle of communities, we must hear their voices. the "story" of the united states is of the "people" of the united states. people's history makes that a reality. -robert o. self
the great american historian howard zinn once said that "the history of the united states is the history of the rebellion against the tyranny of power." the rebellion against tyranny against the united states was not a struggle to bring freedom and liberty to the many, but to preserve the power of the few. what's more, in the past five years, many students have been re-learning the basic tenets of u.s. history that have been conveniently removed from public school curriculums. the book howard zinn wrote in 1944 for children, a people's history of the united states, is now a required text in many high schools and colleges. even though i am an american studies major, i have not had a course that touches on the history of this country. my background is in education. my love of history was fostered by my high school teacher's love of history, and by reading howard zinn, i was able to begin to understand that the great events in our history are not just the products of military power or political power. this is a history of the people, with a great deal of power. the author of this great book, howard zinn, influenced a generation of people who are helping to shape our history. a people's history of the united states is an extremely important addition to the classroom for those who teach history. it is an excellent resource to supplement and deepen student understanding of what it means to be a citizen of a democracy and of what our government has been willing to do to further its power. i teach in a public high school and have found this book to be a perfect tool to improve our understanding of history. -tim porter; peace officer this book is a must read for anyone who wishes to understand our history. i am a 7th grader at prince of peace school. reading this book made me understand that what was happening during the civil war was not "just" a war. the war was being fought to preserve the right to vote for blacks. to help the union cause, lincoln, an abolitionist, freed many slaves. this was an effort to preserve our democracy. the confederate states were trying to preserve slavery. to help the confederacy, lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation, which made all of the slaves in the confederacy free. the south was trying to preserve their way of life. to help the south, president davis re-instituted slavery. all of these actions were an effort to preserve our democracy and protect our rights as americans. the battle between the north and the south was not just a battle of military power. the north was trying to preserve its democracy and the south was trying to preserve its way of life. 81555fee3f
