its a good thing that r. kellys music is so rich in variety. its not a good thing that every track sounds the same, that every song is a re-hash of some other song, that every tune repeats the exact same chords and feels the exact same way. its a better thing that he started out with his hit single in my room and that he has continued to grow and develop as an artist, leading to the diversity of his latest release.
none of these tracks are bad, but most are forgettable, and many would have remained just that had its masterfully orchestrated production not been so perfectly present in each and every track. most of his lead vocal performances are better than his backing vocals, and most of his harmonies are better than his lead vocals, but the end result is one of the most beautiful r&b albums of the 21st century. it certainly is the most revealing, thanks to the consistently revealing vocal performances on the album. whether it be an almost r&b-lite version of the rock-inflected detour from the classic street-radio anthem, trapped in the closet, or the slow, love-inflected slow-jam, any, that of course, is a girl, ill treat your body like a temple, kelly is re-writing his own mantra about love into music that is somehow even better than before. its rare that one album can be the end-all, be-all of such a talented artists career, but the essential r. kelly is just that. its not perfect, but its a good enough start to make the rest of his catalogue of song-after-song-after-song worth your time. 81555fee3f
