The Raw Material for Success

It is important to know that the success stories we see in the media were formed through thousands of hours. Most of what seem like overnight success on the media, took years to achieve. There were many years of underground work before it got noticed by the media.

Anywhere in the world, successful people usually make the headlines. When you pick up a magazine or a newspaper you are bound to see faces of career leaders on its pages. Go to social media, and you would immediately notice that the trending stories have to do with people considered as the most successful in their fields.

We like to talk about successful people. We like to know their net worth; we like to know how much they earn. We like to talk about their lifestyle; what they wear, what they eat and where they live. We even want to know who they sleep with it.

Well, who doesn’t want to know how it’s like to be successful? Because successful people live the sort of life we crave for, we are naturally interested in their stories. Truly, successful people deserve attention. But while it is okay for the media to focus their lens on successful people, they don’t always capture the most important thing.

Most times, the media focuses on the “current” life of successful people and not on their past. Though we regularly hear stories of how successful people enjoy their wealth, we don’t often hear stories of their former life.

Why is their former life important? We should know the previous life of successful people, because hidden in their past is the secrets of their success. Even though news of their current life might tell us what we want to see, stories of their past informs us of the things we ought to see. When we dig their past, we learn of the struggles they went through. But when we focus on the existing stories, we only see their luxurious life. Oftentimes, such representation makes people think success is quick and easy.

It is important to know that the success stories we see in the media were formed through thousands of hours. Most of what seem like overnight success on the media, took years to achieve. There were many years of underground work before it got noticed by the media.

There are no quick and easy ways to success. Success is a gradual process, and getting there is also a daily process. You can’t sleep your way to success. I like the way Wilson Mizner puts it, “A man who wakes up and finds himself a success hasn’t been asleep.”

To succeed in whatever you do, realize that every single day counts. Real success is an accumulation of seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and many years of hard work. For that reason, you must value time because it is the raw material for success.

Treat time as your most valued friend. But then again, be sensible enough to recognize that time has no favorites. It is constantly on the move. It won’t wait for you when you get stuck, depressed and unable to act on your goals.

Time is impassive; it doesn’t care how you feel. It just moves on; it waits for no one. It is constantly in motion, whether you are usingit or not. But you must never let it overtake you. Contend with it by maximizing every single moment.
