that's it. you have reached your destination. a roald dahl book is a rare thing. and as he wrote in his very last story, the wonderful story of henry sugar (which is a little gem by the way and you'll see why i think so in a moment), his childrens fiction and plays, “have nowhere else to go. they are my children.”
roald always liked to get on his high horse, and in fantastic mr. fox he has fun with aesop. the fox is clever and noisy, but robs and eats the little animals, and when the villagers chase him away, he has no one to blame but himself. the moral: keep your nose clean, aesop says, and you wont get trapped.
the book has almost certainly affected many children for life. how many of them continue to enjoy reading dahl long after theyre out of childhood? imagine. imagine a young reader, with all the wonder that childhood provides, entranced by a massive long-haired childlike beast who was actually a giant peach. and then imagine how he would react when he found out, years later, that what he had once believed to be a true childrens story was in fact an elaborate hoax perpetrated by a grownup. maybe youd cry, too, as you reread dahl s fiction, with its huge array of characters, each one of them important and all of them as monstrous or monstrous as theyre drawn.
unfortunately, dahl did not write kindly thoughts into the minds of children. instead, he created monsters, ghouls, vampires, pirates, zombies, faeries, and witches, creatures that may seem more attractive to youngsters than fairy-tale characters who are essentially young, innocent and delightful. 2516d825b2
