FROM CONSULTANCY TO LAUNCHING A SUCCESSFUL SHIPPING COMPANY: THE STORY UNHEARD
The founders of Shiprocket are from diverse backgrounds, with respect to academics. Saahil Goel and Gautam Kapoor, two of the founders, were childhood friends. Back in 2012, Saahil was working in insurance technology as a Technology and Process Consultant. Gautam came from an operational and commercial background. He was working in the industrial automation sector on German Machine parts.
But what fascinated these two founders was how Amazon was creating a tool for US channels to sell their products online in various countries.
Then, started the journey of these founders to innovate a channel directly connecting the retailers and consumers. Vishesh, the third founder, joined 6 months after the establishment of the company. He worked in Sales background of various ventures along the way, including ‘Kartrocket and Crafty’, ‘Shopping Kart’ etc. But finally, they landed up with the ultimate solution of shipping goods and hence Shiprocket was established.
The name ‘Shiprocket’ was given to the venture, to promote the idea that the delivery of the goods was faster than any other sources. The name suits the whole idea of starting this venture, which was to increase the efficiency in India e-commerce Logistics.
SHIPROCKET HELPING SELLERS ACROSS THE GLOBE
Shiprocket started with the very basic idea of providing shipping solutions to thousands of sellers across the globe. Along with the delivery of goods, the idea was to provide it cheaper, effective and faster than any other channel.
The mission was to help the sellers with better selling on online platforms. They wanted to help online sellers with faster, cheaper and most effective delivery of goods. Currently, Shiprocket is working with around 25,000 sellers across the globe. 35,000 orders are being delivered on a daily basis to 220 countries at the hour.
FUNDING FOR SHIPROCKET: THE WHOLE STORY
Initially, for about 2 years the whole startup was self-funded from the savings of Saahil and Gautam. In between these 2 years, the founders worked alongside with other companies to generate some funds and invest in the venture.
After grasping the whole idea of the market, and analyzing the working system for shipping, Shiprocket started to attract funds from other sources. The two strategic partners and investors of Shiprocket are ‘Nirvana Venture Advisors’ and ‘Bertelsmann India Investments’. Other investors include BeeNext, Five Ideas, etc supporting the venture financially.
THE PROMINENT TEAM AND PARTNERS OF SHIPROCKET
The founders belonged to very diverse background but their teamwork became the key factor of their success. It brought them together as one key factor in running the startup successfully throughout the globe. Now a team of around 200 people is working 24*7 at Shiprocket to provide the best experience to their customers.70-80 people are engaged in engineering products and a similar number in operations.
Saahil Goel is the Chief Executive Officer. Gautam Kapoor holds the position of Chief Operating Officer and Vishesh Khurana is the Director of the company. Akshay Ghulati is the Chief Business officer. Gautam Bansal is the Chief Financial & Strategy Officer and Sunil Kumar is the Chief Technology Officer.

Shiprocket has started a new facility for the sellers and buyers. The buyers can pay for the goods after they have received the delivery. The sellers, on the other hand, can get the payment before the buyer pays for it. In other words, both the seller & buyer get satisfaction, and the burden of payment is held upon Shiprocket.
Usually, delivery is done in 5-7 days, but the seller receives the payment within 2 days. So now, the seller can focus on the more important decisions.
Also, Shiprocket is planning to bring the small scale regional sellers on the online platform, so they could deliver the goods at a larger scale than before.This initiative could bring about a lot of change in the workings of the regional sellers who haven’t had the opportunity of being able to sell goods on a large scale.
