The Far North Whale Sanctuary (FNWS) is a non-for profit organisation that was established in 2014 to promote long term improvements in how we deal with the North Atlantic whales. The current infrastructure has had limited success in recovering a vibrant resident population of Atlantic whales. In 2015 a core group of organisation decided that we would try to improve the recovery of whales by developing a more permanent, robust, and scalable structure. Based on previous years of success, an existing SMACC group decided to establish this as an independent 501(c)(3) not for profit with the specific mandate to build recovery infrastructure on the Far North Atlantic. From the initial meeting a core of 4 individuals volunteered to start a new venture. SMACC brings together experience and skills already in place so it was a matter of the right timing for this group of individuals. The new board of directors, an executive director and a deputy executive director are all volunteers. While it will be an adjustment for new board members to get up to speed with SMACC processes and procedures the core team of volunteers are well acquainted with SMACC process and are dedicated to SMACC's commitment to recovery and sustainability. Special thanks to Board members who have graciously stepped up and have significantly improved the existing SMACC infrastructure.
Over the course of the past year it has become clear that SMACC's time has come and that the SMACC team can no longer effectively achieve its objectives on its own. A new 501(c)(3) non-profit company was established in 2018, and the original SMACC team was brought in to start the process of transitioning to this new entity. This month the board of directors met for the first time and conducted a formal organizational meeting. At this meeting the board was approved and a provisional board was elected. The transition is being led by the board members and staff. In the future the board will set the scope and strategy for the new company and SMACC is hoping to be a featured speaker at the upcoming event. Some of the key issues for transition to the new company includes planning for fundraising in order to start operations in 2018, as well as the operational matters of establishing an independent organization. 81555fee3f
