Is social media becoming the primary source of mass media? Before I expound on this question with a detailed answer, there are a few terms I would like to explain. What is mass media? Mass media is a diverse ecosystem of media technologies through communications mediums to quickly reach an innumerable number of people. There are four types of mass media: print media, outdoor media, broadcasting media, and digital media, which has the largest and most active audience all over the globe.

Social media would be classified as digital media because all social platforms are designed for sharing and creating multi-media online social for virtual communities and social networking groups. Now that we understand what mass media is, what is social media? Social media is the websites and digital applications that facilitate the creation, sharing of content, and general communication. Social media is often associated with a select amount of digital platforms; there are eight types of social media networks.

Types of Social Media Networks

  1. Social Networks: LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, MySpace
  2. Discussion Forums: Reddit, Quora, Online Review Websites
  3. Consumer Review Networks: Booking.com, Yelp, TripAdvisor, Online Consumer Forums
  4. Blogging and Publishing Networks: Medium, Tealfeed, Kindle Vella, Amazon Author Community
  5. Interest-Based Networks: Goodreads, Amazon Reviews, and Information-Based Community Forums
  6. Social Shopping Networks: Goat, StockX, Amazon, Etsy, QVC
  7. Curation and BookMarking Networks: Pinterest, Tumblr
  8. Media Sharing Networks: Snapchat, Instagram, Youtube, Twitch, Tinder, Bumble, Chispa

Of all the social media networks in terms of mass media, news, and content creation Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook have become amassed with media from corporations, businesses, and individuals all over the globe. As of 2022, there are 4.70 Billion social media users, which is a 7.8% increase from the previous year, according to Smartinsights.com. More than half of the world is on social media, and living in a world where information is at the tap of a screen, those social media networks have become convenient for information, news, and content. It has reached a point where we do not need to watch the news, read the newspaper, or wait for information to be broadcasted because it will be published on social media at some point.

Also, when more credible information is published on social media networks, billions of people share, recreate, and provide personal and opinionated perspectives that could misconstrue, misinterpret, and cause a social uproar, depending on the nature of content and interpretation. IndividualsIndividuals who are active on social media know that social media has become a search engine, and anyone can search up merely any content, information, or news they would like to see. But the primary issue is whether social media is the designated application and platform we would like to communicate, mainly when there is no control over who is on social media, what is uploaded, and what content is considered “world friendly.”

Aside from credible mass communication, social media is filled with pornographic content, violent content, racist content, inaccurate information, and primarily frivolous content only to entertain. I find it funny how when I was in my early pre-teen and teenage years, breaking news, international information, and the local news came from credible sources; now, my friends send me links from social media regarding all types of issues and dilemmas with millions of people voicing their opinion on topics, subjects, and situations that they have no thorough knowledge of or on. In addition, many people on social media are on it for “fun” and ruin content. Media and create fake stories about actual events are news being released for views, likes, and a feeling of being welcomed.

Finally, most of what we see on social media in news, drama, and information is one-sided and inaccurate. The consumption of news from social media brings different connotations because many individuals consider the first story accurate. Even the news from credible sources gets misinterpreted because of the opinionated and uneducated perspectives, not by all but by many. Frankly enough, I find it funny how people trust social media when ninety percent of social media is not real. That includes the users. Be careful of what you consume because it will eventually destroy you. That includes me too.
