If there's one takeaway from the year 2020, it's the necessity of being prepared for both expected and unexpected situations.

The statement that people spend 2 hours and 22 minutes on average of their daily life on social media is not an exaggeration. Not after what we witnessed last year.

2020 forced us to adapt and reshape the elements of the marketing landscape. And given the importance of social media in our lives, we did adapt to the change quickly.

Most notably, online sales skyrocketed, short video content was most appreciated, online meetings became the norm, and few other major shifts happened.

From rising platforms to using social media for shopping, attending live events, or leveraging UGC, it's time we dive into the social media trends of 2021.

Meme Marketing:

Memes have now become a global language amongst netizens. Memes are becoming a source to heal depression, anxiety, and sad thoughts.

Not just Twitteratis, but even brands are utilizing memes to make their content more compelling, humorous, and relatable to their consumers. Memes are now actually a tactic to connect with hard-to-reach customers.

You obviously don't want to bore your audience with random product or service suggestions all the time. And this is why meme marketing should be in your marketing strategy.

Anthony Pompliano, an American entrepreneur and investor, tweeted, "Eventually companies will have to hire professional meme-makers as part of their marketing strategy. Memes are the message."

Bin the emojis and gifs, meme marketing has just started, and the trend shall continue this year.

Influencer Marketing:

Influencer marketing is not a new trend, but 2020 boosted it. It can be seen from both perspectives - A colossal rise in the number of influencers on social media and brands spending massive amounts on influencer marketing.

In fact, influencer marketing delivers better results than running paid ads. Marketers are not just collaborating with 1 or 2 influencers but are working with a wide range of small, relevant, niche influencers.

According to joint research by Twitter and analytics firm Annalect, around 40 percent of respondents said they have purchased an item online after seeing it used by an influencer on Instagram, Twitter, or YouTube.

This stat here totally makes sense why influencer marketing is such a popular tactic to drive sales to your company.

Live sessions and Webinars:

While we all had to cancel all our in-person events, it led to an uptick in the number of people tuning into live-streams, whether it was a branded live-stream, a live video from their favourite celebrity, or an online webinar.

Even now, when the COVID situation is better in 2021, live streaming is here to stay. People are now used to being able to interact with brands in real-time online. They can check a product without stepping out of the home.

The key is here is that your audience doesn't require signing up. It requires an informal message to make aware of the live session or webinar.

Virtual events:

Virtual event doesn't only keep your audience entertained and informed, but it also provides metrics to measure. Here's one fact to prove the statement - According to Marketing Profs, Facebook users comment ten times more on live video sessions than on regular videos.

Virtual events ignite hyper-personalization to hone in on providing a customized experience to event attendees. While the attendees need a formal call and register themselves to join in the event, it allows nurturing and building new relationships. The key is to drive engagement through great speakers and rich content.

With the given rise of event platforms, and existing brands announcing new features, this shows how big virtual event shall be in 2021.

Short videos:

TikTok alone has changed the way we consume video content. With its direct and catchy videos, people started watching more. And it's here to dominate this year.

According to CISCO, by 2022, 82% of all online content will be video content. It certainly shows how crucial it is to make video content stay relevant in the social media domain. Videos are easy-to-consume content.

Here's something to prove the statement - TikTok for business launched earlier in 2020 to expand paid promotions. Instagram is regularly coming up with quirky updates on Reels. It's a no-brainer to have video content in your marketing strategy.

Community-focused:

You cannot expect to grow without having a community. Yes, building a community takes time and effort. But once done, they can become your brand advocates. You can begin to assign responsibilities to other long-standing members.

The first step in building a community is by starting a conversation and showing trust. Talk to them, make them feel heard. Out of all social media platforms, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Reddit are the best platforms to take part in and create your own community.

2020 had our shops closed, and stay-at-home orders made people stay behind closed doors, which also meant that they were spending a lot of time online. Now, this urged brands to create more human-centric ways of reaching their buyers. Which then led to building a good rapport amongst them.

Over the next 11 months, we would see this continue. Short videos will become increasingly common, live sessions, webinars, virtual events will rise to the top, UGC will remain an integral part of every marketing strategy, and brands would turn to focus on their community.
