Four years ago in Russia, all five nations hailing from the continent were eliminated in the group stages, accumulating eight points collectively, but in Qatar there has been a wonderful resurgence in this World Cup of shocks.

Cameroon fell spectacularly short despite shocking five-time champions Brazil in the final act of the group stages.

Morocco contributed seven points alone to the 24 in total in the group stages this time around, featuring in the knockout stages of the World Cup for only a second time, also reaching the round of 16 in 1986, losing 1-0 to Germany that year.

What we've seen for the first time at this World Cup are five African teams with five African coaches. It's a historic moment. In the case of Walid Regragui, he is a former Morocco international. He understands the culture of the country and he knows what it takes to win.

The Spaniards, who humbled Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening game, eventually finished second in Group E behind Japan following a shock 2-1 loss to the Samurai Blue – a result that also sent four-time champions Germany tumbling out of the tournament.

Morocco, meanwhile, defied the odds to top Group F ahead of Croatia and Belgium and are now making their second-ever appearance in the knockout phase.

They are the only Arab team left standing in the competition and will enjoy significant support at the Education City Stadium in Al Rayyan.

Coach Walid Regragui’s approach so far has focused on defending deep and capitalising on opportunities to punish opponents on the counterattack.

Morocco are the feel-good story of the 2022 World Cup tournament so far. The Atlas Lions topped their group, the first African nation to do so in this century, and will be looking to upset their neighbors Spain in Tuesday's round of 16 clash.

For Morocco, it is their fifth appearance at the World Cup. They've never made it past the quarterfinals stage, and a date with destiny is set for tomorrow. Although the odds are against them, head coach Walid Regragui said the team is "well-prepared" and that "we'll do everything to win." With team chemistry, leadership and cohesiveness, Morocco might have the perfect mix to keep on surprising.

Meanwhile, Brazil are not holding anything back after scoring four first-half goals against South Korea to advance to the quarterfinals. The Selecao are one of the most entertaining teams to watch, providing football that's easy on the eye with plenty of flair, individual talent and dance moves to celebrate.
