The Visionary Leader is Like a Scriptwriter

The scriptwriter knows that it is only when the script is graphic that the movie director would be able to recreate the story with actions. Consequently, what was originally written with words would thereafter be brought to life by actors. Similarly, your vision is supposed to tell a story — the story of a preferable future.

Ideally, a clear vision is like a screenplay. This means that it should be as clear as a script written by screenwriters for a film or television program. Like every good screenplay, it must be graphic.

Do you know that one of the main qualities of a movie script is clarity? If a movie script isn’t clear, the film makers would find it difficult to bring out what was in the mind of the writer. Therefore, in conveying his thoughts and imagination, the script writer would have to skillfully build a story by selecting his words, carefully.

The scriptwriter knows that it is only when the script is graphic that the movie director would be able to recreate the story with actions. Consequently, what was originally written with words would thereafter be brought to life by actors.

Similarly, your vision is supposed to tell a story — the story of a preferable future.
Just as the scriptwriter develops a story for the film makers to interpret it with action, a leader is expected to design his own vision like a story, bearing in mind that it is meant to be realized through
action.

So, the leader’s vision should be like the story in a screenplay which is
expected to be dramatized in real life. If film makers can play up what
was written by another person, you too should be able to act out your
vision — which is also a product of your own imagination.

Normally, you should be the hero of your own story. Even though, you may have
other key actors who might serve as team members, as the leader, you are, in fact, the main actor of your own vision. But if the vision isn’t clear enough, it would be difficult to act on it. This is why you should be able to see your vision in a pictorial form. Let it be a story. That way, it would truly be like a representation of your future.

When your vision is vivid it would make you naturally believe it’s attainable.

Secondly, a clear vision is orderly. Like a screenplay, it should be captured in
sequence. Your actions and plans should be methodical, taking each step at a time. And each of the steps should be related to one another. When you go through your vision, you should be able to know what action to take and at every given time.

Because it serves as a guide, you should handle your vision in the same manner
that a civil engineer handles a building design. That is, follow what you’ve written on your vision statement.

Or you could treat your vision in the same way that a soldier uses a map to prepare for battle. Generals do not go to war until they’ve gone through their map. Let your steps be determined by what is written in your vision. Know that if your vision can’t guide you then it probably isn’t clear.

Ensure that it is good enough to serve as your blue print; let it guide you. Effective leaders actually build their careers based on what has already been captured in their vision.
