Is there really a best time if your audience is growing?

Posting on social media is a subset of marketing to build an audience and make connections. Are there best times to post?

The answer is yes because studies show when engagement is highest, but I’ll also answer no because if you’re posting consistently, then you’re not just posting at the best times.

According to Hootsuite, the best times to post on social media are as follows:

10:00 AM on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

There. Now you know.

Simple, right?

The Rationale for Times to Post

Hootsuite says this because “we analyzed over 30,000 social media posts to see if certain days and times universally get more engagement on social media than others.”

But wait.

10 AM in New York is 7 AM in Los Angeles and 3PM in London.

To complicate matters further, the best time to:

  • post on Facebook is 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • post on Instagram is 11:00 AM on Wednesdays
  • post on Twitter is 8:00 AM on Mondays and Thursdays
  • post on LinkedIn is 9:00 AM on Tuesdays and Wednesdays

Will you really only post on those days at those specific times? Come on, now.

Your Posting Strategy

I do believe that weekday early mornings are best and select time frames for the area you’re trying to reach. It’s like posting articles on Medium. My traffic is always highest in the mornings, but I’ll sometimes post in the afternoons and generate strong responses.

But social media isn’t only about posting to get clicks and sales.

It’s really about building relationships and participating by asking questions, giving answers and being part of a community.

If you’re in Los Angeles, like me, and have clients in the region then go ahead and follow those times — or rather, time frames.

You’re going to vary the times because the audience changes and you should vary what you’re posting and how often you’re posting on the various channels.

Each platform has a specific purpose so keep that in mind, too.

What to Post

  • Link to stories, blog posts you’ve written
  • Inspiring content like uplifting quotes or mention a challenge you’ve overcome or a milestone reached
  • Ask others how they’re doing — find specific users and ask them
  • Pose questions related to your industry and ask for answers

While it’s good to post in the mornings, interactive content can and should occur throughout the day. Remember, social media is about building relationships online.
