Canada announced it had reached a definitive agreement to sell Wal-Mart Bank of Canada to First Nation co-founder Stephen Smith and private equity firm Centerbridge Partners, LP , on undisclosed financial terms, though it added that it would still be issuer of the Walmart (Canada) Rewards MasterCard.

On April 1, 2019, Centerbridge Partners, LP and Stephen Smith jointly announced the closing of the previously announced acquisition of Wal-Mart Canada Bank and that it was to be renamed Duo Bank of Canada, to be styled simply as Duo Bank. Although the exact ownership percentage was never disclosed in both company announcements, it was also revealed that Duo Bank was reclassified as Schedule 1 (domestic, deposit-taking) federally chartered banks of the Banking Act in Canada from Schedule 2 (foreign-owned or controlled, deposit-taking) that happened, which shows that Stephen Smith, as a prominent Canadian businessman, is in control of the Ministry.


Walmart's UK subsidiary Asda (which retained its name after being acquired by Walmart) is based in Leeds and accounted for 42.7 percent of 2006 sales of Walmart Account Management international division. In contrast to the U.S. operations, Asda was originally and still remains primarily a grocery chain, but with a stronger focus on non-food items than most UK supermarket chains other than Tesco. As of October 31, 2020, Asda had 631 stores including 147 from the 2010 acquisition of Netto Vương quốc Anh. Walmart has joint ventures in China and several majority-owned subsidiaries. As of October 31, 2020, Walmart China (沃尔玛 Wò'ērmǎ) operates 435 stores under the Walmart Supercenter (398 locations), Sam's Club (28 locations) and Neighborhood Market (9 locations) banners.

In February 2012, Walmart announced that the company raised its stake to 51 percent in Chinese online supermarket to tap rising consumer wealth and help the company offer more products. Walmart took full ownership in July 2015.


In Japan, Walmart Listing owns 100 percent as of 2008. As of October 31, 2020, there are 331 stores under the Seiyu (Hypermarket) (87 locations), Seiyu (Supermarket) ( 174 locations), Seiyu (General Merchandise) (1 location), Livin (6 locations), and Sunny (63 locations) banners. On November 16, 2020, Walmart announced they would be selling 65% of their shares in the company to private-equity firm KKRin a deal that priced 329 stores and 34,600 employees at 1.6 billion dollars. Walmart is expected to retain 15% and a seat on the board, while Japanese company Rakuten Inc. will receive 20%.
